Washington County Excise Tax Waiver EXTENDED

The Excise Tax in Washington County has been waived for the first 3000 sq.ft. of construction on a new home or an addition. This may be up to a $9000.00 savings for a home owner. The county is waiving the excise tax to stimulate jobs in the construction industry. The square footage calculation includes basement space, so most home owners will receive the full waiver. Oliver Homes Celebrates 60 Years

Looking Back at 60 Years of Successful Homebuilding.

Oliver Homes has been in the business of building new homes since 1948. That was the year that John R. Oliver, the company's founder, was a student at West Virginia University and decided to build a four-unit apartment building as part of his education. That project earned him six college credits and set the wheels in motion that saw the birth of the builing company known today as Oliver Homes. This year they are a second-generation builder and celebrating their 60th year in the homebuilding business. Since their modest beginnings, Oliver Homes has grown to become the largest home grown, residential builder and possibly the longest existing builder in the county.

"Dad was quite an entrepreneur. After returning from college and landing a job at the Washington County Board of Education as an Industrial Arts teacher, he began building homes over the summer months," says Taylor Oliver, President of the firm. Not long after starting the company, John R Oliver hired one of his students, irvin Blair, Eventually Irvin became part owner and only recently retired after 50 years of service. But by 1964, the business was too big for summer months only and was incorporated as John R. Oliver, Inc. It wasn't until eight years later that John R. Oliver became a full-time builder providing starter homes in Washington County.
